The power of sharing our stories is extraordinary and we often underestimate their ability to unite us.

In May of 2017, I was shaken by the speech given by Park Yeon-mi when she addressed delegates of One Young World about her escape from North Korea. The most poignant moment arriving when she spoke about how their compass had broken while crossing the Gobi desert, forcing she and her mother to navigate by the stars. As she looked up she felt hopeless, believing in that instant that she was alone in the world.

At this time in history we are all navigating waters none of us have ever sailed before. This is why it finally felt like the right moment to take an idea I’d written down after a friend had shared Park Yeon-mi’s story with me and create some kind of online island where people could come and go, finding courage in the words built by others while building stories of their own. My hope is that these letters serve as mighty little rafts returning us all to the safety and comfort that should always be our global community. Whether we are crossing deserts, oceans, or braving our own uncharted emotional territory we must never feel alone in our uncertainty.
